The 5yr Well Check - Ellie

Thank goodness it is over! Better yet, thank goodness there is not supposed to be another visit like this until 7th grade - SEVENTH GRADE!

Oh my.

So I pick up Ellie from school, as planned. Though I didn't plan on getting caught behind a funeral procession and I didn't plan on not being able to reach the school secretary to pull Ellie from class. With those minor setbacks, we were only a bit late to our appointment. It seemed okay since they seemed slammed - yet the waiting area was eerie calm and quiet.

Before we arrived to the doctors office, as we are walking out of school Ellie proposes that she ask the doctor if she can skip the shots today. Okay - you can ask the doctor! But know that I really think the shots will happen today. Sure enough she asked & sure enough the doctor agreed that there would be shots. She (the doctor) tried to reason with her (Ellie), but no go. Okay, let's change topic!

So we moved on with the appointment.

She was weighed (39lbs - 65%) and measured (42 1/2" - 50%). They tested her urine - fun! They checked her vision and hearing. We need to make an appointment with our ENT's audiologist! The doctor asked her a series of questions and provided similar inaccurate answers as Abby did. She was so worried about those dang shots that her participation in the rest of the appointment was challenging.

Then it was finally time for the shots! She had 3 shots and a finger prick (to check hemoglobin, cholesterol, and lead). Yep, she only had 3 shots while Abby had 4. The nurse felt horrible that she didn't realize that they had some of the one that was combined when Abby was in the other day. She asked if they'll compare notes - and I'm sure they will. But even so, go ahead and give Ellie 3 instead of 4. Abby will be fine with it and one less for Ellie is a major bonus.

We started with the finger prick and she was hysterical with no amount of reasoning possible. She only wanted the "good shots", but we weren't able to figure out what the "good shots" were. Finally we got the finger prick in and done. Suddenly we were okay. Then we took a bathroom break. As we passed the nurses station the doctor and I caught eyes. She heard all the commotion and was impressed. Then I told her that we had just started - finger prick done! She chuckled. We then returned and finished. Once it was all over with, Ellie was good. Sure they weren't fun, but they were quick and she was completely fine once it was over with.

We then went out to our promised lunch date at Fazoli's and enjoyed lunch with just the two of us.

When we got home Mommy offered to give her a hug and she said she didn't need it because her shots were all better. It will be interesting to see how the night and weekend goes. Abby is still milking the leg pain.

Boy am I glad all this shot stuff is behind us!
