School Birthday Celebration

Today was the day that Ellie's preschool class celebrated the summer birthdays. Over half of her class has a summer birthday, so it was a big celebration. Technically it was their 1/2 birthday celebration, but that has caused much confusion in our household so we de-emphasized the 1/2 part.

Each birthday family contributed to the celebration in one way or another. We volunteered to bring in the treats. We've had fun with the cupcake cakes in the past and turned to that idea again this time. Ellie quickly chose the fish cake and we thought it turned out really cool. I know she really enjoys the fish in her classroom and I'd guess that that influenced her choice. I was thrilled that we were able to easily go with something neutral since there were 3 boys and 2 girls celebrating.

We were successful in arranging and sharing the cake with Abby's class. Abby's snack day was coming up so with minor snack day rearranging we were able to align their days and share the abundance of cupcakes. Happy sugar high kids and fewer leftovers for home!

Where do you get your ideas for cupcake cakes? I've been looking for some EASY designs and everything seems so complicated. Please, recommend something!

Cristin -

We got the idea from some friends of ours... who purchased them at that mart store :). They look really easy to make, but we just buy them. The only downfall is that they all are the same size... 24 cupcakes. They have many designs to choose from and they have a catalogue of cupcake cake options right along with all other cake options.

They are incredibly easy to serve, except there is extra frosting on the bottom of the cupcake to hold it in place. We love that there are many fun non-character designs. Everyone seems to love them.

The pinkie poodle cupcakes from last year though, we did make those. We came across that idea from a magazine. I'm sure there are pics of those in the June 2006 archives.

oh! thanks for the tip. If you had actually made those my next questions were all about dying the frosting and how to get the frosting to look swirly.

I remember the poodle ones, those were really cute. Luckily my daughter still thinks that it's a treat to choose between chocolate and vanilla icing for her school cupcakes so there isn't too much pressure ;-) I was thinking of ideas to one up the other moms though because i'm competive like that. lol
