Stickers... A Child's Gold
Last year Abby's teachers reported that she was reluctant to participate during their morning circle time. At first we thought she just needed time to settle in, but it continued throughout the year. She would always come home and share the new songs with us and happily sing them throughout the house. Without the report from her teachers, we would have no idea to her aversion during school. Carie and I talked with her a few times and her interest/participation seemed to increase only marginally. Fortunately her teachers didn't force the issue at all and she was welcome to chime in when she was ready. The little stinker was just soaking it all in so she could share it all with us.
Recently we were reminded of last year’s preschool experience when they started choir at Church. We thought that they both would enjoy participating in choir. We also really like the youth choir director! Both girls appear to love music and love to sing around the house. We talked with them about choir and got a feel for their interest level. They were beyond excited at the idea! The first week of choir practice they were reluctant to participate, as we had expected. Each weak their participation level has increased, but Abby is still quite reserved to share her voice. Yet they talk about choir (and their new friend Nora) like it was the best thing ever for hours and days on end. So we keep going back. They both did well singing in Church this past Sunday! Ellie actually sang a little of the song. Abby appeared to mostly just stand there. Fortunately neither one did anything obscene.
Abby has also memorized all of the lyrics to the cd's they listen to at night. Sometimes she'll go up to her room, turn on the music, hang out and sing. She'll also sing along to songs on her favorite shows. We recently started watching Pooh's Heffalump movie and she's got the whole thing memorized. We often hear both girls singing/talking along with the movie from the back of the van. But don't look at them!
On Monday I picked up the girls from preschool and noticed that all of the kids in Abby's class were holding a sticker. Abby was very excited to show me her sticker! Ellie was a little bummed that she didn't have a sticker, but we worked through that one easily. A good reminder and practical lesson that we all have our own special moments/treats.
As we are driving home the girls are singing in the back of the car. It seemed to be a new song that Abby had learned that day. Ellie had picked up on the tune pretty quickly and chimed in. I however cannot remember the lyrics; all I remember was the intense giggles that arose between the two girls. It was a pretty fun(ny) song!
So I get around to asking Abby about her sticker. She proudly told me that her teacher gave her a sticker for singing with her friends. It seems that Abby's new teacher has found the trick to get all the kids to happily participate in circle time!
Maybe this sticker is the ticket that allows Abby to share her voice with the world. I can't wait to see.
