Carnival, Balloon Fair, Parade, Choir & Sundae Sunday
The end of August was a busy time for our family. There were a plethora of events of interest for us to choose from. We frequented Millard Days three times during the week, the Balloon Fair another day, a family birthday party thrown in for good measure, and the start of choir followed by a youth event. What a crazy week!
The two evenings we spent at the Carnival were amazing. We couldn't ask for better weather conditions and a little bug spray kept the bugs away. The crowds or lack there of, was absolutely the best since we are not crowd people. It was quite nice being able to let the kids roam and have some distance.
Spencer rode his first carnival ride, the cars. The girls were gracious enough to ride with their brother. While they had a good time on the cars, it seemed so last year to them. Both Abby & Ellie remembered their experience the previous year and could not wait to ride the "dragon train". Basically it is a kid roller coaster with the cars in the shape of a dragon. I'm not sure what the official name of the ride is, but that is what they call it. They rode every ride they could, but they rode the "dragon train" over and over and over again. One of the cool things about this ride was the operator. He seemed like a really cool guy. The kids would go round and round and round many times, he'd slow them down like the ride was over, and then he'd say "do you want to go around again?". Of course all the kids were screaming "YES" as they are laughing hysterically. Then he'd send them off. He would go through this routine many times. All of the kids seemed to love it.
Thank goodness the 2nd night we went they had wristbands and could ride everything as much as they wanted. And that they did! On our 2nd night Mommy took her first Ferris Wheel ride with the girls. Had I known that Mommy had never ridden a Ferris Wheel before, I would have encouraged her to go the previous night and it could have been a first for Mommy and the girls. While the girls enjoyed their rides, Spencer enjoyed watching them. He also had a blast walking up and down the “midway” flirting with people.
Both nights ended with a special carnival treat. After all, that is the part that Mommy & Momma were really looking forward to. Mommy & Momma shared a hot and tasty funnel cake, both nights. We didn’t need any time to make that decision. The first night Abby's choice was cotton candy and Ellie's choice was popcorn. Without trying to sway Ellie’s decision, we pointed out all her options knowing what might be ahead of us. They got to watch the cotton candy being made fresh, which was fun. Ellie thoroughly enjoyed her popcorn (a favorite) but realized that "coffee candy", as she called it, was pretty cool. Meltdowns, ahhh the meltdown over coffee candy after a fully stimulating and late evening. Thank goodness we were already in the van. Abby was a kind and generous sister and shared her coffee candy, but that wasn’t enough to make it all right in Ellie’s world. The next night everyone got to choose their special carnival treat again. This time Ellie chose "coffee candy" and Abby chose a snow cone. Everyone was quite pleased with their choices. Whew!
Friday night we were off to the Balloon Fair! We’ve had a great time at this event in the past and this year was no exception. Though we do wish we could have gone on Saturday night instead, but the kids didn’t know any different. We arrived and enjoyed our picnic dinner before going to enjoy the kids’ activities. All of the kids played with balls inside a hot air balloon and the girls got to play on many of the inflatable games (slides, jump house, etc…). Then we all settled back in and watched as the hot air balloons came to life. Quite a sight to see!
Saturday morning was our 3rd trip to Millard Days this year and our first ever experience of the Millard Days Parade. Wow, were we impressed! We had no idea it was such a large event in our small community. Everyone had great fun! The girls collected more goodies than any one child would know what to do with. Spencer thought it was necessary to run out into the middle of the street, constantly. I can see us frequently this event in the years to come. That afternoon, after a marathon nap from the boy, we headed out of town to our niece’s 3rd birthday party.
Sunday was another full day with Church activities. The girls are getting more involved in Church activities, Sunday school, and Choir. That afternoon was their first ever choir practice. While they were “nervous” and didn’t really participate the first day, neither one could stop talking about it afterwards. We really like the choir director and the assistant and as long as the girls want to go, we’ll get them there. Maybe they thought Choir was so cool because they got to wear their swimsuits? Immediately following choir practice was a Sundae Sunday Water Wonderland event for kids at the Church. In honor of this event all of the choir kids wore their swimsuits to choir and got to pretend surf on their beach towels during warm up time. While it was a dreary day, the girls had a blast playing in the water, drawing with chalk, playing games, and of course building crazy sundaes.
Since then they’ve started Sunday school and have had one more successful choir practice. They sing in Church next Sunday, the 17th. Ought to be interesting!
