Swim Lessons

We took the plunge and the girls started swimming lessons. They are enrolled in an 8-week session with four other classmates who are all about the same age. This is our new Sunday evening activity and will take us through a good part of the summer.

This is their first big activity (by choice) and I imagine it will blossom from here. The trick, I think, will be to keep a lid on it so it doesn't get out of control. Sure, we want them to be involved and experience a variety of activities. But we also want them to hang back and just be kids.

They did have quite a good time, as much fun as you can have in a 30 minute swimming lesson. Both girls were quite excited to go. They have been asking for days when it would be time for their swimming class. When Sunday finally got here we talked about all the things that would happen in our day before it was time to go to class. They were so jazzed to go that it was hard to wait until it was time.

They were so on board with the whole thing that they were even willing to rinse off in the shower at the pool before getting in.

Abby was also totally willing to put her ear plugs in, which was a first. We've had these ear plugs for a couple of summers now with no success of her wearing them. This time though, not only was I able to put them in, they stayed in for the duration of the class. She was amazed at how well they kept the water out of her ears. Miracles do happen!

It was fun to watch them during class. Periodically the girls would look up at us and wave with the biggest smiles ever. Unfortunately I totally missed the part where Ellie jumped in the pool with gusto. It was my turn to chase after the boy, but Carie did get to see it. She said it was a pretty spectacular jump compared to the rest of her classmates. Abby (and the other classmates) did jump in as well with a bit more hesitance, as if to check to make sure her teacher was really going to catch her. Till next week…
